Vincent "MEGA" Crane

This modification replaces the default "Small American Hangar" ("Hanger 2" for you mission designers) with an upgraded version. The original was dark grey and very low resolution with no interior. The upgrade is four times the resolution of the original and features five new skin options. These include:

Bare Metal light colored metal was created for the desert terrain, but compatable with all terrains
Desert Camo a light brown-medium brown combination for use with desert terrain
Green Camo a dark green-medium brown combination for use with all but desert terrain
Winter1 an off white with grey splotches for use with winter terrain
Winter2 an off white with grey lines/swirls for use with winter terrain

Unlike the original, has a complete interior including structural steel. You can also taxi into and out of it. This mod moves the hangar forward roughly 75 feet. A collection of fuel drums are placed at the rear of the hangar (in what was the hangar's original position) and is the center of the "target/collosion bubble" of the hangar.

Only 256 x 256 and below textures were used in this mod, so there should not be any issues with older video cards.

Installation
------------
Before installing this custom modification, you are advised to make a backup of your original ww2.sqs archive.

Instructions

Extract the contents of this archive to the WWII Fighters\Data directory. Assuming the
default installation, this is: C:\Program Files\Jane's Combat Simulations\WWII Fighters\Data

The files will be extracted to a new directory WWII Fighters\Data\Small Hangar Mod.

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the WWII Fighters\Data\Small Hangar Mod.

To install one of the five hangar options, double-click on the corresponding installation icon. For example, to install the bare metal version, select the install_metal_hangar icon. This will open up a DOS session and the installation will proceed in this window. When the installation is complete, a message saying "DONE...INSTALLATION OF MEGA's OPEN HANGAR 2 MOD COMPLETE, CLOSE DOS SESSION" will be displayed in the window. Close the DOS session by clicking on the X close button in the top right corner of the window.

Installation is now complete.

Designer's notes

I got the idea for this mod when testing and taking screenshots of a Med Spitfire skin under development. The desert terrain was the setting and the dark grey hangars at the airfield just seemed out of place. After posting some screenshots of a bare metal skin version to the WW2 Fighters forum, I recieved requests for other textures. As a result, this became a five option package. The sim limits the utilization to only one of the five options at a time.

Note that installation of this mod moves the apparent location of the hangar forward about 75 feet. This is done so that you can taxi into and out of the hangar. The edge of the target/collision bubble is at the rear wall of the hangar, so consider this to be a solid wall- it will damage the aircraft if you hit it. The front and side walls are "soft" and you can taxi right through them. There is a collection of fuel drums behind the hangar. As far as the simulation knows, the drums ARE the hangar with regard to damage and collisions. When strafing the hangar use the fuel drums as the point of aim. Also note that you can collide with the damage model above the fuel drums without coming into contact with the drums themselves.

The default skin for this hangar utilized 128x128 textures. This mod uses 256x256. Much effort was made to minimize the flicker effect caused by using higher resolution textures on ground structures, but there is still a bit of this effect. Optimization was achieved by changing the texture layout and modifying the corresponding LST file to alter the rendering distances for the L1, L2 and L3 models.

The hangar textures are 100% original, created from scratch. The fuel drums are the "fuel depot" included in the original sim and utilize the original textures. The default hangar did not include an interior. The interior, including structural steel, is entirely new. My handle (MEGA) is included on a number of the new textures. Feel free to alter them for your own use or redistribution if you wish, but please give proper credit when distributing these files.

Enjoy!
